Cable PassThru Cabinet

The ASC Cable Pass Thru Cabinet (CPTC) is a double door wall cabinet for passing signal cables between adjacent rooms.

The ASC Cable PT Cabinet was originally developed for recording studios and their need to pass through soundproof walls an increasing variety of signal cables; optical and digital in addition to the standard audio and mic cables.

Both cabinet doors seal airtight around the cables, hold them securely and safely in position. They are easy to open, swing up and out of the way for a clear passage which provides a quick and easy cable addition or change out. A neoprene seal tunnel interconnects the two wall mount cabinet doors to allow for a wide variation of wall widths. Installation requires little more than an 8.75" x 5.75" hole thru the wall.

ASC Cable PT Cabinets are specified by architects for the scientific research lab, surgery complex, testing facility and classrooms where multiple rooms are cable interconnected with each other and a common computer room.

3 Different Styles To Choose From:

CPTC 1.0

The original pass thru cabinet CPTC 1.0 continues to be available in CNC wood base, memory foam seals and multi-coat lacquer paint. Standard finish is gloss texture black but primer ready or another custom color is available.

Price: $475.00 (April, 2018).

CPTC 2.0

Second generation CPTC 2.0 was developed specifically for surgical centers. It retains the same basic CNC formed cabinet interior and cable seal system but is provided with a white powder-coat mild steel outer shell and door.

Price: $775.00 (April, 2018).

CPTC 2.1

The CPTC 2.1 is the stainless steel option.

How It Works

The standard Cable PassThru is intended for cables up to 3/8" in diameter, at which point it can handle up to 6 cables per Cable PassThru.  Use of smaller cables can allow the capacity to approach 20 cables.

The unit stops sound leakage by use of a system of memory foam and the mass of the doors. Despite the cutting of a hole through your wall, the Cable PassThru also maintains the seal between the wall interior and your room, preventing dirt and insulation from reaching your cables, hands, or room surfaces.

The Cable PassThru system is simple and versatile, allowing for an infinite number of cable combinations and changes with no complex circuitry, soldering or difficult rewiring. This makes it a perfect complement to existing patch panels or wall plate solutions. Simply thread the cable through, then close and tighten the doors. It's that easy.

Made from lacquer-coated medium density fiberboard, the Cable PassThru is tough enough to withstand the rigors of a research laboratory or public school atmosphere.  For particularly sensitive or rough environments, a stainless steel version is available through our custom shop.

Installation

Step 1: Materials

Parts Supplied:
2 - Cable PassThru Units | 12 - 2” Bugle Head Drywall Screws
1 - Rubber Seal in Cardboard Tube

Tools Required
Drill
#2 Phillips Bit
Tape Measure
Keyhole Saw
Pencil
Sharp Knife
Stud Finder

Step 2: Placement

Using your studfinder, determine a spot on your wall between studs to install your Cable PassThru. Ensure that the placement is clear of any wires, ducting, or plumbing, as we need a clear path through the wall.

Step 3: Prep for Cut

Once placement is determined, hold the Cable PassThru up to the wall. Level the unit using a Torpedo Level (Fig. 1). While continuing to hold it in place, use a pencil to trace the outline of the inner sleeve (Fig 2).

*Use included Wall Cutout Template to verify and adjust size as needed for correct fit.

Step 4: Cut CablePassThru Hole

Use a keyhole saw to cut out the hole traced in Steps 2 and 3. Cut out any insulation that may be in the wall where the hole is. Then use a long drill bit or similar tool to indicate the corners of the hole on the other side of the wall. Use the keyhole saw to cut the second hole on the other side of the wall.

Step 5: Install CablePassThru

Place one of the Cable Pass assemblies into the hole we cut in Step Two. Check once again to be sure it’s level. Place the six 2” bugle head drywall screws into the provided screw holes. Then use your driver to gently drive each screw into the drywall, making sure not to overdrive them. Repeat the process for the other side. You are now ready to install your rubber seal.

Step 6: Measure Gap

Once both Cable PassThru units are installed on either side of the wall, measure the gap between the edges of the PassThru tunnel (See Fig. 4). The completed seal will settle into notched lips.

Step 7: Measure the Seal

Push one end of the Rubber Seal through cardboard tube until it is protruding (Fig 5). Measure the exposed end of the rubber seal until it matches the length measured in Step 5 (Fig. 6). Continue to measure the rubber seal while rotating the tube to ensure it is even and protruding end is flush and square.

Step 8: Cut Seal

Using the cardboard tube as a measuring guide, cut the rubber seal to length with a sharp, serrated knife (Fig. 7).

Step 9: Insert Seal

With one CablePassThru door open, insert the folded rubber seal through the cable slot (Fig. 8). Unfold rubber seal in the PassThru tunnel, using hands to press it into the notched lips (Fig. 9).

Step 10: Finish

Seal with a tight bead of silicone caulk around all four exterior edges where the passthru abuts the wall. Congratulations, you’re done!

OPTIONAL:

For a more permanent seal: Smear a light coating of fast drying adhesive to the notched edges of the cable passthru units. Install and flatten the seal. As shown in Fig. 4

ASC Cable PassThru STC Results:

ASC Cable PassThru measures at least STC 48
A transmission loss (TL) test was done on the ASC Cable PassThru. By adjusting STC curves to fit the 1/3rd octave TL data points, the rating on the unit was found to be at least STC 47.5. The reason “at least” is used here to describe the results is that the test wall is lab rated STC 50. The upper limit STC for the Cable PassThru cannot be measured in this lab. A sound rated wall of at least STC 70 should be used. The background noise should be at least 10 dB below the test data points and it actually was at best around 1 dB below the data points.
